Gaza-born Palestinian artist Majed Shala will have his work premiered in a solo-showing in London this month at the Arab British Centre in an exhibit titled Breathing the Air.

The works, all acrylic and mixed media, are said to "document his very personal journey through the extremes of conflict."

Of increasing international reputation, Shala is himself a gallery founder, having started the Shababeek Gallery (Windows Gallery) in Gaza, where he also works as a lecturer in the arts programs run by the YMCA.

His latest exhibit, curated by Aser El-Saqqa of the London-based Arts Canteen, is said to treat the "juxtapositions of internal and external identities, of internal turmoil and conflict with external norms."

The Arabic script, illuminated by an unseen sun, bright colors popping out of dark amorphous backgrounds and mountainous forms raise "existential and epistemological questions about who we are as human beings and what we can know of others' identity and realities," organizers say.

The exhibit's curator writes that "Ultimately, his message is one of optimism - our common humanity demands that we all aspire to breathe the air."
